Welcome to the Pulse

When I came back to the University of Mississippi Medical Center last year after having done medical school and residency training in Arkansas, I was very impressed with the advances that the department had made in the six years I had been gone.

We take care of the sickest of the sick in Mississippi, and every one of us has a daily role to play. The department has had a newsletter in the past, and Dr. Douglas R. Bacon, professor of anesthesiology, asked me to start it back up as a way to keep anesthesiology staff and alumni informed of the strides the department is making now and in the future. We want you all to feel invested in the place where you trained!

We are going to send out an edition of The Pulse a few times each year, and if anyone has any ideas about stories to highlight, please let me know of them. I spent the last month trying to hunt down the names of every alumni member for as many classes as I could, but I am still missing a bunch, so if you know of any classmates who would like to receive this newsletter, please e-mail me at smbrobertson@umc.edu.

The Department of Anesthesiology’s objective is to educate future anesthesiologists and health care providers in Mississippi and across the nation. The department's ACGME-accredited training programs for physicians are designed to create qualified and highly competent expert consultants in anesthesiology and pain medicine.

The department’s goals are threefold:

 •  Provide state-of-the-art patient care in areas of perioperative medicine, critical care and pain management;

 •  Provide the highest quality of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; and

 •  Make major contributions to the science of anesthesiology while expanding the body of basic and applied science knowledge through research.

The Department of Anesthesiology offers a four-year residency training program and is approved for 38 residencies. It is designed as a competency-based program with a systematic progression of key learning goals and milestones.

The program is committed to educating anesthesiology residents who are knowledgeable in the science of anesthesia, skilled in their craft and able to serve as expert consultants in the field of perioperative medicine.
